Lamprocapnos (formerly Dicentra) 'Spectablis' (Bleeding Hearts)
Dicentra are unusual in that they have decorative leaves which create a background to the arching stems of flowers which number many along each stem and are a heart shape but with a drip through the bottom hence the common name bleeding hearts. The original Dicentra is pink flowered lending even more to the common name but now many cultivars exist and vary in flower colour, leaf colour and shape and plant size. There is one (or many)for everyone.
Flowering in late spring through summer these emerge firstly with the leaves in spring followed by the flowers. They have a good long flowering season, Once finished however they enter a stage of dormancy as just roots underground. This definite seasonality makes them ideal for mixed plantings as they can sit dormant while winter and spring perennials come into their own then take over with a flourish.
Spectablis is the classic bleeding hearts a classic reliable favourite. It has attractive green leaves on rosy stems and holds arches of multiple bright pink and white heart shaped flowers which flower for weeks.
