Hesperantha 'Strawberry'. (Kaffir Lily)
Hesperantha which were formerly known by the name schizostylis and still are in some places. Are commonly known by various names including kaffir lilies & flag lilies.
They are a wonderful addition to any garden. Being tough & easy to grow they tolerate sun or shade & all but extreme soils. They will grow in beds borders containers baskets and even along the edges of shallow water.
Best of all they flower late summer through to window making them wonderful late colour in the garden.
They are semi evergreen herbaceous perennials. Have tall green strap like leaves that vary for 15 to 25 cm in length and hold flower stems that bare multiple bold colourful flowers on each stem. Each flower stem lasting a few weeks.
Very easy to care for, they multiply year by year and can be split should you wish to add them around the garden. Look amazing planted in larger clumps or swathes but are just as beautiful as a delicate bunch in a window box.
'Strawberry' is rarely offered it has a mid pink flower with white speckles which gives it its name. A new cultivar to us this year but proven itself well. Being tolerant to drought and damp and multiplying well.
Plants will be shipped in a 9cm pot. Upon arrival unpack and water place in a cool semi shady spot to allow to recover from shipping. After a day or two these can be planted out. Dig a hole the size of the pot and fill with water. Sprinkle a handful of slow release food granules into the hole (this is optional but will give the plants an added boost and can be purchased with your order) soak the plant pot and remove the whole plant and its soil in one place directly into the hole back firm and firm in well to ensure their are no air pockets. Water in. Should the weather be hot during planting further watering may be necessary. Otherwise simply enjoy and trim back old flowers head once they have gone over.
