Leucaena l. (River Tamarind)
Leucaena leucocephala commonly known as the river tamarind is an attractive mimosa like tree with a fast growing habit excellent drought tolerance and white pom pom like flowers when mature. Grown as both foliage and flower plants in the UK they are typically seen as indoor/glasshouse plants due to a dislike of our cold wet winters but can be grown outdoors in summer or in areas which stay above 5 degrees.
Can be pot grown best in a free draining mix, we use 50 / 50 potting grit and multipurpose compost with large stone pieces in the base of pots to ensure good drainage. Keep in full bright light and avoid cold draughts rarely water in winter, only water when the soil is dry at least 1cm deep. Always drain thoroughly. Can also be grown in the ground, they do well in glasshouse beds.
Typically evergreen however may lose its leaves and go dormant during our winters dont worry. it will re-leaf in spring, while dormant do not water.
