Linaria purpurea (Purple Toadflax)
Linaria come from the wildflower originally around 10cm tall with delicate yellow flowers. This make all the cultivars excellent nectar sources for bees & flying insects. Also makes them very tolerant to our changeable weather being capable of coping with drought & damp, wind & frost.
Purpurea has numerous fine leaves along rich green stems which give rise to tall spikes holding multiple rich purple flowers that resemble tiny snap dragons. Delicate pretty flowers up close and wonderful purple haze from a distance.
The flowers can grow up to 1.5m typically in their first year they flower shorten and reach the full height when mature.
These are a herbaceous perennial which are semi evergreen fairly non descript in winter but springing into life in spring to provide months of colour right through till oct/nov.
A short lived plant usually lasting 3-4 years but freely seed so will pop up else where year by year creating a wonderful naturalistic feel. If you prefer a more structured style collect the seed and sow where desired or in pots to plant out.
Grows in full sun or part shade in all soil types & exposures. Suitable for exposed & coastal gardens as well as inland/sheltered.
Will pot grow but will not reach the full size but will still flower.
Plants will be shipped in the pot size selected. Upon arrival unpack and water place in a cool semi shady spot to allow to recover from shipping. After a day or two these can be planted out. Dig a hole the size of the pot and fill with water. Sprinkle a handful of slow release food granules into the hole (this is optional but will give the plants an added boost and can be purchased with your order) soak the plant pot and remove the whole plant and its soil in one place directly into the hole back firm and firm in well to ensure their are no air pockets. Water in. Should the weather be hot during planting further watering may be necessary. Otherwise simply enjoy and trim back old flowers head once they have gone over.
