Aronia Berry
These plants are not often seen for sale however they are a favourite of ours.
Classed as a fruiting shrub these have a lovely silver bare stem in winter, are covered in numerous white flowers similar to Mayblossom in spring (these are loved by bees, you can watch ours waiting for the flowers to open). Summer / autumn brings dark purple black berries about the size of a currant in mass. One plant can crop a few kg easily once mature. These fruits should be left on the plant to ripen and picked when the begin to turn soft. After fruiting the leaves turn a gorgeous orange / red before falling for winter.
The plant offers almost year round interest in blossom fruit and colour. It is also a fantastic bird for wildlife, should you choose not to crop the fruits yourself they are loved by birds.
If this isnt enough, the plants are fully hardy, low maintenance, easy to care for and can be grown as a bush or trained against a sunny wall, our most successful is espaliered against a westerly wall, its takes up very little space and crops heavily every year.
The fruits can be eaten raw tend to dry the mouth, hence the common name 'chokeberry' however cooked they are utterly delicious. Recipes can be hard to come by but i find blackcurrant recipes exchange well. My personal favourite is aronia berry cookies. So tasty.
The fruit also freezes exceptionally well, simply rinse and freeze, they keep for a long time in a standard freezer and can be cooked from frozen.
Plants are sent as healthy rooted plants propagated from our own healthy heavy cropping stock to guarantee good healthy plants with sweet fruits. The plants are small but healthy ready to be planted out. Planting from a small size allows the grower the choice of what form (shape) to grow the plant into.
Comes in a 9cm pot
